Between 1995 and 1999, I made several trips through parts of China. I lived in Beijing for four months. In 1996, I spent several months in Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou in the region known as Jiangnan (“south of the river”) , a part of China long associated with the history of Chinese painting and calligraphy. I made drawings as I went and visited places where artists I admire had lived. In 1999 I went by train from Beijing to Gansu province and Xinjiang in the far west, to see the Buddhist wall paintings at Dunhuang and other places in Chinese Central Asia.
